Tuakana Teina with Pukeko

Tuakana teina refers to the relationship between an older (tuakana) person and a younger (teina) person and is specific to teaching and learning in the Māori context. 

In our first tuakana teina lesson, we teamed up with a younger class (Pukeko) and taught the them how to create a volcano. To create this experiment, all you need is an empty bottle, baking soda and vinegar. We also used our school's sandpit to build the volcano! A chemical reaction occurs when you add vinegar to the baking soda - it creates a gas called carbon dioxide.

The Great Whangaroa Raft Race

Tuatara built a raft and painted a flag for The Great Whangaroa Kiwi Can Raft Race. We had a lot of fun designing, sawing, and painting the raft and flag. Even though all 26 of us would of loved to be paddling during the race, only 4 of us were allowed on the raft.

Lonsdale Camp - March 2019

In March, Tuatara went to Lonsdale camp. It's just like an 'outdoor classroom' - the camp explores skills and tests individuals. Some activities include a Confidence Course, Commando course, Blind fold course, a Conservation Bush Trail area with 11 activity stations, and a team building area. There are several places of historical interest in the immediate vicinity  such as the Rainbow Warrior memorial.

Ki-O-Rahi House Tournament

Tuatara and another class in Mangonui School (Kotuku) participated in a Ki-O-Rahi House Tournament. Although the rain came pouring down, we still had loads of fun!
